The title centers on Harry Mason as he searches for his daughter, Cheryl, who has disappeared after a car accident that left Harry unconscious. The protagonist is in Silent Hill, a town that appears abandoned and surrounded by fog (which is actually ash) and snow , filled with monsters, and being invaded by "other world", a darkness that makes the structures of the village in a hellish vision. As Harry runs through the village, begins to discover the history of Silent Hill and a cult ritual performed to bring a god on earth.
The goal of the game is to guide the character Harry Mason through the dilapidated town Silent Hill, in his search for his missing daughter Cheryl. Several hostile creatures roam the streets and buildings of the town, posing a threat to Harry who because of fog and darkness of Silent Hill will always have poor visibility. The player must find a flashlight at the beginning of the game, but the light can only see a short distance. For this reason the sound plays an important role in Silent Hill as the protagonist hear the sounds that make enemies instead of seeing them directly. Besides the flashlight the player must obtain a radio alert to the presence of Harry's enemies, emitting static when they approach, giving you the chance to detect them before they strike. Another obstacle for Harry is his own weakness, being an ordinary man with little experience in using weapons, can not tolerate many blows of enemies and exhale strongly when has run long distances.
To navigate through any area, Harry needs to pick up a map, which are similar in style to the tourist maps. These maps can be read if there is enough light and Harry write and draw on them sights to assist the player. Silent Hill Crossing requires finding several keys or solving puzzles to progress, and the player regularly faces heads in each area. Harry must defend against these creatures, and other monsters that infect Silent Hill, with a variety of weapons.
